I was asked to paint this picture of HMS Victory for the retiring secretary of the Portsmouth Building Society in 1989. It shows Victory slipping out of Portsmouth harbour with the 'Square Tower' seen on the left and the 'Round Tower' on the right. A massive chain was slung between the towers in olden days to protect the city from marauding French ships. On the extreme right is the 'Sally Port', were Lord Nelson left Portsmouth bound for his famous encounter with the French fleet at Trafalgar.
